WHO ARE WE?
SOME OF Our Callers
Callers are the "hosts" of the evening. They pick appropriate dances from the thousands available, walk us through them, and help keep us on track when the music starts. In Calgary, we are lucky to have a variety of excellent callers with different styles.
I first learned contra in Burlington Vermont and have been dancing for over 25 years. I have called, or as I prefer to call it “prompted” dances across western Canada and I'm always open to helping groups get started. I'm a storyteller and folk musician, and I see contra as a perfect bridge between my two passions. There is a magic that occurs when the dancers and the musicians create something between them, it tells a story.
I enjoy social dancing, and I enjoy teaching social dance. I also
practice and teach dances from the Renaissance, including English
Country Dancing. English Country Dancing is the direct ancestor of half
a dozen kinds of dance, including our own New England Contra Dance.
I like to call flowing dances, and to share new patterns that I have experienced across Canada and the western US. What touches me most in contra are the euphoric moments of being "lost" in the energy and flow of the dance....
